\nI owe you a HUGE apology. In my hurrying to get caught up. I pinked EVERYTHING. I've gone back and think I fixed it so your work is in blue. Please correct further if it needs it. I am so sorry. It kinda locked up on me and when it finally released it was PINKED! Bizarre. At any rate, I have added somethings. I thought it would be cool to add QR codes so parents with smart phones could use QR codes to hyperlink to students' narratives...plus I gave the media center the ability to check out this type of device...it is my fantasy media center (not my actual one :-)","dateCreated":"1303782158","smartDate":"Apr 25, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"bpowell1x","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/bpowell1x","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"38120274","body":"Wow! I ask a question and things explode! LOL That looks amazing ladies...I added a little and did include GPS from High School World History. I figured that this assignment could definitely bridge from a study of ancient civilizations, especially given the requirement to reference similarities and differences. I included religion for 2 reasons - it is specifically mentioned in the standards but it is also supremely important in the development of civilization (sorry - history teacher comes out...).
\nBarbara - congrats on graduation! And impressive with the QR codes. I have to admit I have never heard of these before that I know of!

\n
\nI love this discovery mode\/experiential idea for a lesson plan. How about having the students act out a mini play which they could present to either the public or younger grades for the culminating activity? Costume research would be needed if they used actual historical civilizations, like the Minoans.
\n
\nAnother idea would be to take the scenarios a step further and have the groups "live" their civilization for three whole days during the school day. At lunchtime, boring food (plain bread, saltine crackers, water, carrot sticks) in limited quantity would be awarded to the lower point groups, while treats (pizza, fruit, ice cream) and more plentiful food would be awarded to the goup with higher points. This would demonstrate that more successful civilizations would have better food and wealth.
\n
\nFor scenario 3, students could craft a 3-D model of their village (not virtual). Another group or the teacher could make a representation of a threat (earthquake, flood, enemy tribe, animals, etc. and see how well the model village "survives").
\n
\nFor scenario 4, students could make scrolls with the laws written on them, or Sculpey or air-dry clay "stone tablets" with the laws carved into them.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"37415438","body":"Melissa,
\nI love all of these ideas especially play and 3D model.. I think you couldn't do the "lunch" idea for a couple of reasons -- students go to cafe for lunch and it would be seen as inapropriate to "punish" them in this way. Perhaps the idea could be modified to snack, no snack.
\n
\nAlso, I think we have to have a tech piece (especially as there is IT person involved). Perhaps, they could have students use GoogleSketch to mock up the 3D piece before they build it.","dateCreated":"1302438878","smartDate":"Apr 10, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"bpowell1x","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/bpowell1x","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"37539494","body":"Barbara,
\n
\nThanks for the reality check on the lunch! I agree a snack or no snack is a better choice for the school environment. I was thinking of this memorable activity our religious education teachers planned when I was in high school: several boxes of pizza were waiting for us when we walked in the room. However, only three or four classmates were allowed to eat or distribute the pizza as they chose. They represented the wealthy countries of the world. The rest of us represented the poor countries. We were entirely dependent on the whims of the privileged students for food and drinks. It really made a lasting impression! (Lest I give my religious ed. program a bad reputation, let me clarify that they did not starve us, of course; we had already had dinner before class.)
\n
\nThe GoogleSketch is a great idea, too. Thanks for noticing we need a tech piece!","dateCreated":"1302623644","smartDate":"Apr 12, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"mwitte1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/mwitte1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"37585798","body":"I like the play idea the best!
